Damask pattern

Damax™ steel is typically produced with 135 layers. A higher number of layers is available upon request. After grinding and/or polishing, the material takes on the typical striped Damask appearance.
To give the steel a different pattern, perhaps based on a customer's design, it is necessary to carry out cold or hot embossing, followed by a mechanical surface treatment such as smoothing or polishing.
Chemical etching (chemical engraving, etching)
To reveal the damask pattern, a chemical etching is required on the finished product.
Before attaching, the surface must have a smooth finish and be thoroughly degreased to remove any oil residue.
For chemical etching, various acids and procedures can be used. The table below provides some recommendations.
| CHEMICAL AGENTS | SOLUTION | TEMPERATURE | TIME |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sulfuric acid, H2SO4 (conc. ~ 96%) | 15% acid + 85% distilled water | 50°C | 20 min |
| Hydrochloric acid, HCl | Concentrated use | 50°C | 2 min |
| Citric acid and iron chloride (FeCl3) | 50% citric acid + 50% distilled water. Heat until the citric acid dissolves. Add approximately 5% FeCl3 to the mixture. | 80°C | 30 min |
The product should be immersed in the acid for the recommended time, or until the pattern appears at the desired level. Heating has an accelerating effect and should be done in a water bath.
Normal safety precautions for handling acids should be taken.
After etching, all traces of acid must be removed: the piece should then be rinsed thoroughly with water, or neutralized in a mixture of water and baking soda.
The contrast between the layers will be further accentuated by a fine-grained surface sanding or polishing of the surface after etching, so that the protruding layers appear brighter.
